THE WHITE HOUSE
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The Tour of the presidential house includes the East Wing - the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, the State Room, the East Room, Green Room, Red Room, Dining Room, the lower level and the Foyer. Tour hours are year round. Tuesday-Saturday 10am-Noon. Congressional tours are available Tuesday-Saturday 8am-9am, by writing your representative ahead of time. The tour usually lasts a half an hour. Note: Congressional tours are limited to 1,200 individuals/day and no photographs can be taken in the White House. FREE!

THE CAPITOL
Capitol Hill on the East End of the Mall. The tallest building in Washington D.C. Enter the east front of the Capitol (the West Side of the Capitol is also referred to as the front) to take the 35-minute guided tour. Tours begin every 15 minutes from 9am-3:45pm. To visit the galleries in either the House or Senate chambers you will need to get a pass from your senator or congressperson by writing ahead of time or visiting their offices for a same-day pass. THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES
1st Street and Maryland Avenue, NE. Term commences the first Monday in October and continues until the end of June. Sessions begin at 10am and recess is at 3pm on days of oral arguments. Sessions are open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis (limited seating). When court is not in session there are free lectures every hour on the half-hour from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Open-Friday 9am-4pm. Closed Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. FREE!

UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MUSEUM
On Raoul Wallenberg Place, on the Mall, between 14th and 15th Streets, SW. This museum memorializes the 6 million Jews and millions of other victims of Nazism who perished in the Holocaust. There is a permanent exhibit and two rotating exhibits. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

WASHINGTON MONUMENT
The Mall, Constitution Avenue at 15th Street, NW. Venture to the top of the Washington Monument and you will find one of the most breathtaking views of the city both in the day and in the night. Open April 1-Labor Day, 7 days 8am-Midnight: rest of the year , 7 days 9am-5pm. FREE!

THE CAPITOL GROTTO
Capitol grounds, northwest of the Capitol. Designed by one of the creator's of New York's Central Park. Built as an original part of the Capitol Hill landscape, the grotto is now a municipal water facility. FREE!

NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM
On the Mall, Independence Avenue between 4th and 7th Streets, SW. Showcasing original objects illustrating the history of aviation and space exploration. The facility also houses the IMAX Largely theater and the Einstein Planetarium. Free public tours from Gallery 100 daily at 10:15am and 1pm. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm (extended hours in the summer). HIRSHHORN MUSEUM
On the Mall, Independence Avenue at 7th Street, SW. Houses a remarkable collection of 19th and 20th century American and European painting and sculpture. The collection specializes in the Ashcan School, Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Minimal and New Realist. Free films and lectures are offered as well. Tours of the permanent collection are Monday to Saturday at 10:30am, noon, and 1:30pm. Sunday at noon, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm from the plaza level information desk. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

AFRICAN ART MUSEUM
On the southern quadrangle of the Mall at Independence Avenue, SW. Extensive collection of African American art is housed in this unique underground museum. FREE!

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY
On the Mall, 14th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. Edison's light bulb, Bell's first telephone, First Ladies Hall of Gowns, Bradford Doll House, Dorothy's ruby slippers, the Fonz's leather jacket, Kermit the Frog, and the Star Spangled Banner are just a few of the artifacts that can be seen at the museum. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATIONAL HISTORY
On the Mall, 10th and Constitution Avenue, NW. Dinosaur skeletons, a mounted African Bush Elephant, the Hope Diamond , the Discovery Room, and the Orkin Bug Exhibit lead the list of interesting artifacts pertaining to man and his natural surroundings. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART
Old Patent Office Building, 8th Street and G Street, NW. American paintings, sculpture, graphic art, and photographs from 18th century to the present. Free public tours from Monday to Friday at noon and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm from the lobby. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM

NATIONAL POSTAL MUSEUM
2nd Massachusetts Avenue, NE. Home of the world's largest stamp collection and related artifacts. Open daily 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

SCULPTURE GARDEN
On the Mall, Independence Avenue at 7th Street, SW. Highlights of the extensive sculpture collection: Rodin's Burghers of Calais, Tribute to Balzac, Giacometti's Dog. The largest public collection of Moore's works as well as bronze reliefs by Matisse and pieces by Brancusi. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

ARTS AND INDUSTRIES BUILDING
On the Mall, 900 Jefferson Drive, SW. The Experimental Gallery features changing multi-cultural exhibitions in the arts, humanities, and sciences; and interactive exhibitions in the physical and natural sciences. Soon to become the African-American Museum. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

AUTHOR M. SACKLER GALLERY
1050 Independence Avenue, SW. This museum is devoted to Asian art from ancient times to the present. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREE!

NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART WEST BUILDING
On the Mall, Constitution Avenue and the 6th Street, NW. One of the world's finest museums with an outstanding collection of European and American paintings and sculptures from the 13th century. Works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and the French Impressionist can be found at the museum. Free Sunday concerts (except in Summer) at 7pm. Tours available. NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART EAST BUILDING
On the Mall, Constitution Avenue 4th Street, NW. The building designed by I.M. Pei, houses a 920 pound Caldor mobile that is three stories high and 76 feet across. You will find contemporary paintings, sculptures, and graphic arts in the museum. Open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday 11am-6pm. FREE!

THE FREER GALLERY OF ART
On the Mall, Jefferson Drive and 12th Street, SW. Contains one of America's finest collection of Asian art shown on a rotating basis. In addition, the museum is also the home of the Peacock Room, a Whistler interior design and works by Winslow Homer, John Singer Sergeant, and James A. McNeil Whistler. Open 7 days 10am-5:30pm. FREDERICK DOUGLAS TOWN HOUSE
316 A Street, NE. The first Washington residence (1871-77) of the famed abolitionist and editor Frederick Douglas. FREE!

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
Old Patent Office Building, 8th and F Streets, NW. Large collection of sculpture, portraits and statuary depicting men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development, and culture of the United States. UNION STATION
50 Massachusetts Avenue, NE. When built, it was the largest train station in the world. With its restoration completed in 1988 some would surely say it is one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. In addition to its impressive architecture, Union Station is the home of many shops, movie theaters, casual and full service restaurants, the red line metro, Amtrak and Marc train Service. FREE!

THE FBI
Edgar Hoover Building, Pennsylvania Avenue at 10th Street, NW. Tour the FBI crime labs, see video replays of bank robberies, visit the practice firing range, and check out the current Top Ten Most Wanted List. Hour long guided tours every 15 minutes. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS JEFFERSON BUILDING
1st Street and Independence Avenue, SE. The Library, purely for research, is now the world's largest, housing 5 million items covering 340 miles. Also, home of the Gutenberg Bible. 45 minute tours are given Monday-Friday at 10am, 1pm, and 3pm. Open Monday-Friday 8:30am-9:30pm. Saturday and Sunday 8:30am-5pm. FREE!

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS MADISON BUILDING
1st Street and Independence Avenue, SE. Built in 1980, the Madison Building is the world's largest library building (46 acres). The library computer has over 80 million cross reference entries. Tours lasting 45 minutes are given Monday-Friday at 10am, 1pm, and 3pm. Open Monday-Friday 8:30am-9:30pm. Saturday and Sunday 8:30am-5pm. FREE!

NATIONAL ARCHIVE

THE GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE
North Capitol Street, NW. This structure houses the world's largest publisher with a stock of 3,000 titles available in the bookstore. Open Monday through Friday 8am-4pm. FREE!

BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING
14th and C Street, SW. See the printing of paper currency (300 billion annually) through the Visitor's Gallery. Tickets for a 25-minute tour are issued on a first come basis. Open Monday-Friday 9am-2pm. Closed Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. FREE!

COLUMBUS MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN
Union Station Plaza, Massachusetts and Delaware Avenues, NE. This fountain is dedicated to America's discoverer. The figures on either side represent the old and the new worlds. The three flag poles represent the three ships Columbus used to reach the New World. FREE!

EASTERN MARKET
7th and C Street, SE. One of the last remaining brick city markets, this Capitol Hill community focal point offers outdoor vendors offering antiques, fresh produce and crafts. Best time to go is Saturday morning. The Market is open Tuesday-Thursday 7:30am-6pm. Saturday 6am-6pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.

BARTHOLDI FOUNTAIN
Independence Avenue and 1st Street, SW. The same sculptor who created the Statute of Liberty created this case-iron fountain. It is also one of the earliest examples of electrical illumination. FREE!

BOTANIC GARDEN
1st Street and Maryland Avenue, SW. You will find palm trees, orchids, ferns , cacti, bromeliads, and seasonal displays at the Botanic Gardens. The building is complete with it's own indoor stream. June-September 9am-9pm. October-May 9am-5pm. FREE!

PRESIDENT JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD STATUE
1st Street and Maryland Avenue, SW. Like Lincoln, Garfield was born in a log cabin, and also like Lincoln, he was assassinated. He was President for only three months when he was shot. FREE!

PEACE MONUMENT
Pennsylvania Avenue and 1st Street, NW. America weeps on the shoulders of History. Inscription on the book: "They died so that their country might live." Originally called the Navy Monument. FREE!

SYLVAN THEATER
Washington Monument Grounds. Outdoor plays, ballets, musicals, and puppet shows are here in the spring and summer. FREE!

SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION CASTLE
100 Jefferson Drive, between 9th and 12th Streets, SW. The oldest building of the Smithsonian operates as the visitor's information center. Open 7 days 9am-5:30pm. FREE!

BOY SCOUT MEMORIAL
The Ellipse, 15th Street between Constitution Avenue and E Street. The 12-foot-tall neoclassical figures are representations of American Manhood and Womanhood, with a contemporary scout. FREE!

THE ELLIPSE
15th to 17th Street, NW (E Street to Constitution Avenue). Technically called Presidents Park, the Ellipse is the sight of the annual National Christmas Tree and various protests. FREE!

FREEDOM PLAZA
Pennsylvania Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street, NW. This flat plaza's walk on map of L'Enfant's plan for the city is the perfect place to practice skate boarding and in-line skating. FREE!

PERSHING PARK
Pennsylvania Avenue between 14th Street 15th Street, NW. A tribute to General John J. Pershing, this popular park's fountain pool becomes a public skating rink in the winter and a great place for picnics in the summer. FREE!

THE PAVILION AT THE OLD POST OFFICE
1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Everyday at noon there is free live entertainment on the Pavilion stage and you can take the glass elevator to the clock tower and enjoy a fantastic view of the city.

FORD'S THEATER
511 10th Street, NW. This is the infamous theater where John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln. In the basement of the theater you can tour a museum of Lincoln artifacts that includes the clothes that he wore that fateful night. Open 7 days 9am-5pm. Closed Thursday noon-3pm and Sunday 2pm-5pm for matinee performances. In addition the theater may be closed for rehearsals. FREE!

US NAVY MEMORIAL
701 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. A living memorial dedicated to all who served in the US Navy. Free Navy band concerts on Memorial Day to Labor Day and the Visitor's Center shows a free thirty minute movie on the history of the Navy. FREE!

CHINATOWN FRIENDSHIP ARCHWAY
7th Street and H Street, NW. This colorful red, green, blue and gold structure has over 7,000 tiles and 272 paintings of dragons in the Ming and Qing styles. FREE!

ANDREW W. MELLON MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN
Intersection of Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues, NW. A three-tiered fountain decorated with the signs of the zodiac. FREE!

NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEMORIAL
E Street between 4th and 5th Streets, NW. America's monument honoring our country's law enforcement. FREE!

TAFT BELL TOWER
Capitol Grounds, Constitution, New Jersey, and Louisiana Avenues. NW. Electronically set to chime on the quarter hour and toll on the hour, daily, from 8am-8pm. Manually rung on special occasions. FREE!

CANADIAN EMBASSY
Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. One of the few embassies that is not located anywhere near Embassy Row. The building is an unusual mix of classicism and modernism and houses a small gallery of art work created by Canadian artists. Open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. FREE!

NATIONAL JAPANESE-AMERICAN MEMORIAL
