GAO Report: Employment and Training Program Grants: Evaluating Impact and Enhancing Monitoring Would Improve Accountability

Poor Oversight On High Growth Grants According To USDOL Inspector General
In the past seven years, the U.S Department of Labor awarded more than $271 million to groups to help train workers for high-demand jobs, but a new audit suggests 10 grants, worth $15.5 million, roughly 6 percent of the grants provided under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative, did not meet performance objectives. GAO Report: Employment and Training: Most One-Stop Career Centers Are Taking Multiple Actions to Link Employers and Older Workers
The Department of Labor has identified one-stop career centers as a means to link older workers with employers through employment and training services. To address the role of one-stops in serving older workers, GAO examined: (1) Labor's actions to help one-stops link employers and older workers and (2) one-stops' actions to help employers hire and retain older workers. On January 22, 2008, GAO briefed interested Congressional staff on the results of the analysis. (04/21/08) |

New Survey to Assess States as Employers-of-Choice; Project Seeks State Agencies to Participate
The Twiga Foundation, Inc. located in Boise, Idaho and the State Perspectives Institute at Boston College are seeking states to participate in a survey for a new project to assess states' readiness to be employers-of-choice.
