Governor George E. Pataki recently announced that more than $1.29 million in Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Incentive Grants for Businesses have been awarded to six organizations around the State.
The grants will help more than 300 young New Yorkers from various communities gain real-world work experiences in occupations that are currently in high-demand.
"We are committed to helping young New Yorkers gain valuable work experience that can place them on the path toward a bright future and a rewarding career," said Governor Pataki. "These grants will help to provide hundreds of young men and women with on-the-job training and exposure to a wide variety of promising career paths."
Particular emphasis will be placed on exposing WIA eligible youth to professionals who work with youth in shaping employment and career-related decisions. As a result of these grants being awarded, the Emerging Worker Subcommittee of the State Workforce Investment Board will review the progress of each individual program in hopes that these successes will be replicated in other areas of the State.
Richard Calo, Chair of the New York State Workforce Investment Board and a Vice President of Human Resources at IBM said, "Governor Pataki holds New York's young men and women in the highest regard, as they are the future of our workforce. The training these youths will receive as a result of these grants will help them improve workplace performance, thus making them a more valuable resource for businesses and potential employers."
State Labor Commissioner Linda Angello said, "New York State, under the leadership of Governor Pataki, is continuously devising new ways to ensure that its workforce is second to none. These grants will enable young men and women to adopt new skills in the workplace that will enhance their knowledge and productivity."
