Staff Assistant

The National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) seeks a staff assistant to work with the Executive Director, eight professional staff members, and three support staff members. Applicants should have earned a bachelor degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

NASWA is the non-profit national organization of state administrators of unemployment insurance, employment and training services, and labor market information programs in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The mission of NASWA is to strengthen the national workforce development system through promotion, liaison, and information exchange. The Center for Employment Security Education and Research (CESER) is the education and research arm of NASWA, devoted to improving government services to America's workers and employers through research, training and consulting. Work Activities

The staff assistant will offer general staff support on various issues and work with the staff on conferences, committee meetings and special projects. Subject matter covered includes employment and training, veterans' employment, unemployment insurance, labor market information, equal opportunity programs and administration and finance of the public workforce system.

General support may include writing articles for the Association's weekly newsletter, drafting and editing meeting minutes for professional staff members, and researching issues related to unemployment insurance and workforce and training policy. Conference and committee tasks can include preparing materials, creating name tents, arranging meetings, mailing materials to meeting sites, and performing other routine tasks. Special projects can include creating searchable databases, developing spreadsheets, basic website maintenance, or developing charts and graphs for presentations.

Knowledge

Candidates must know and be proficient with Microsoft office products, particularly Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. They must be fluent in English and be able to apply rules of composition and grammar correctly. They also must be competent in basic mathematics and statistics.

Skills

Candidates must be skilled at listening, speaking, reading, managing time, writing, learning, identifying problems, and perceiving business and social situations. They also must be able to set and adjust priorities among competing tasks during the work day under the guidance of the Executive Director.

Candidates must have a professional demeanor toward colleagues, members of the Association, visitors, guests, callers, and any other individuals contacting the office; they must be able to pay close attention to detail and keep errors to a minimum; and they must be punctual, reliable, responsible, composed, honest, ethical, tolerant of differences and willing to change as required.

Experience

This is an entry level position. No experience is required, but relevant experience and an interest in public policy is desirable.

Salary is $32,000 per year plus benefits. Benefits include annual and sick leave, health and dental insurance, Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan, and a parking/metro subsidy.
