MAJOR DUTIES: This position is located in the United Sates Department of Labor (DOL), Office of the Secretary, Office of Job Corps.

The Office of Job Corps (OJC) supports the administration and management of the Job Corps program, which helps at-risk youth ages 16-24 who need and can benefit from intensive education and training services to become more employable, responsible and productive citizens. The program operates in a group setting at 124 centers, both residential and non-residential in 48 States, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The 2010 budget for the program is approximately $1.7 billion. The program serves approximately 60,000 individuals per year.

The Director, Office of Job Corps: a) provides overall management and direction to this sizeable DOL program; b) serves as the chief spokesperson and focal point for overall skills development system activities and issues with the scope of that Office; c) brings together the Directors and Chiefs of all Divisions comprising the Office to facilitate the exchange of information across Divisions within the Office; and d) coordinates the resolution of issues and implementation of action plans as appropriate, ensuring that all Office efforts are strategically aligned in furtherance of developing an effective training program for youth that serves as a key part of a workforce development system that benefits America's workers and employers.

While this position is currently organizationally placed in the Office of the Secretary, the Department's 2010 Budget submission indicated the Secretary of Labor's intent to move the Office of the Job Corps to the Employment and Training Administration. Preliminary Congressional action on the Department's 2010 Budget provides appropriations language that would effect this transfer upon final action. The incumbent in this position will assist with this move when it occurs.

The incumbent provides leadership and direction so that the national Job Corps program provides low income youth with the education and training they need to obtain and hold a job, enter the Armed Forces, or enroll in advanced training or further education. Provides leadership in developing and maintaining policy and systems for the Office of Job Corps operations in the regional offices and Job Corps centers throughout the nation.
